The upper back is called the thoracic spine, and it is the most stable part of the spine. The range of motion in the upper back is limited because of the spine’s attachments to the ribs.
Upper back pain is usually caused by soft tissue injuries, such as sprains or strains, muscle tension caused by poor posture, or looking downward for long time periods (eg, texting, cell phone use).

Strength & Stretch
Eagle Salutes help to open the chest, shoulders and upper back. Sweep the arms overhead and cross the wrists. Try to touch palms and bring the hands level with the floor. Point the hands down while bending the elbows, then open the hands out to the side. Take a moment here to turn the palms up and tip the thumbs behind you a bit to open the chest and strengthen the upper back.
